<image:title>Success Stories - From Homelessness to Entrepreneurship: StepUp Ambassador Sianna L. - “I found StepUp—not because I was desperate, but because I wanted more.”</image:title>
<image:caption>When Sianna secured a job at a university finance office, she thought she'd made it. With great pay and strong benefits, it was a job to be proud of. But, behind Sianna's professional success was a secret: she was homeless. Sianna was a mother with a plan; she chose to be homeless and enter the shelter system so she and her daughter could access resources. She tried hard to hide the struggle, but every day was a battle for Sianna. She needed transformation. She needed StepUp. “StepUp saw me as an entrepreneur, a mother, and someone worth investing in.” Sianna originally came to StepUp Ministry because of the promise of a free breakfast. Once here, she stayed for much bigger reasons. She felt seen and understood. She made friends who supported her, found mentors who challenged her, and received resources to support her daughter. “StepUp saw me, not as broken, but as brilliant. StepUp met me where I was and polished my strengths. They poured into my business, my education, and my confidence—until I was overflowing.” Sianna is now one semester away from earning her degree, she owns her own business, and her daughter is thriving. As a proud supporter of StepUp and an outstanding example of what our programs can achieve, she has also been chosen as one of our first StepUp Ambassadors. In this role, she will share her story of transformation and inspire others to pursue StepUp success for themselves. She is building a legacy not only for herself, but also for others. “StepUp didn’t just help me survive. They helped me shine.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Journey to Redemption: StepUp Ambassador Timothy J. - “Before StepUp, I struggled to dream beyond my circumstances. StepUp didn’t just teach me skills—it gave me the vision and courage to build a completely new life.”</image:title>
<image:caption>As a young man, Timothy J. went AWOL from the Air Force. He was on the run, not just from the military, but also to escape his mistakes and the harsh reality of his life. While Timothy did eventually finish his Air Force service honorably, life didn't suddenly improve for him. He still had many more years of struggle ahead; he was in debt, working low-paying jobs, and facing a third divorce. Naively thinking all he needed to change his luck was a car, Timothy reached out to Wheels4Hope, a StepUp partner who provides transportation to those in need. Seeing a need that went beyond just a car, they referred him to StepUp. And at StepUp, he found transformation. “StepUp gave me dignity, purpose, and the tools to rebuild my life.” Today, Timothy is a man who no longer runs from pain like he once did. Now he walks toward healing, with StepUp at his side. Timothy graduated from our Empower48 Life Skills program, in which he was encouraged to dream boldly. He created a vision board that included starting his own business, traveling with his wife, and building a strong foundation for his family. Through hard work and dedication, Timothy has achieved just that. He is now a husband, business owner, father, and one of StepUp's first StepUp Ambassadors. In this ambassador role, he will share his inspiring story of transformation, and through his example, he will motivate others to pursue success through StepUp just as he did. “StepUp changed my life. And for anyone wondering if change is possible—I’m proof that it is.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Moving Past Your Past: SaQuon B. - “StepUp Ministry helps make the community a brighter place.”</image:title>
<image:caption>When SaQuon joined our Employment Academy, his past was holding him back from the future he wanted. He came into the StepUp community with a pending charge, a history of previous involvement with the justice system, and a tremendous amount of pride. SaQuon's pride was his most significant stumbling block initially, causing him to dismiss stable jobs based solely on their status rather than their overall career potential. Once he was able to change this limiting mindset, SaQuon took advantage of StepUp’s many resources, both independent and collaborative. As a result, he was able to secure a job he wanted and gain the security he had been craving at the start. “He humbled himself as much as necessary to get what he needed to get,” shared Dennis A. Jarmon, Sr., Director of StepUp’s Employment Academy. SaQuon is currently employed as the Parts Manager with a competitive salary and benefits. Aside from his stable career path, he’s also found a supportive community at StepUp that will be with him for the long haul. “The Employment Academy was very supportive, helping to establish stable employment. It was also a great pleasure to collaborate with other adults working through this program. I highly recommend this program for anyone who needs help with employment, no matter what your position in life is.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Family Shift: Sa’Niya W. - “StepUp is a place where I have fun but also learn about things that apply to real life.”</image:title>
<image:caption>Sa’Niya W. is a middle schooler who has found a safe and supportive place in StepUp Ministry's Youth and Young Adult Program. Sa'Niya and her family are soon-to-be graduates of StepUp’s Empower 48 Program, a 48-week program designed for individuals and families seeking to build a stable future through accountability, mentorship, and personal development. As a young person navigating her early teens, Sa’Niya is a participant in StepUp’s Middle Ground Program, which caters to children aged five to fifteen. Her favorite part of the program is Teen Talk, where a smaller group setting allows discussions about topics affecting adolescents to happen, with StepUp's staff present to make these discussions fun and engaging. Sa’Niya’s favorite hands-on activity has been the dirt cake math lesson, where she loved using fractions to measure ingredients and, of course, getting to eat what she made helped her enjoy the learning process even more! “I enjoy the team-building activities that allow my friends and me to discuss real-life situations in a safe environment. Through StepUp, I have learned to be more comfortable around others, and I’m more confident in expressing my opinions and embracing who I am." While her family’s upcoming StepUp graduation is a significant step for her whole family, Sa’Niya does not see it as the end of their StepUp story at all. Her parents will stay involved through the StepUp Alumni Program, and Sa’Niya says that her goal is to continue growing while applying all the skills she has learned over the past year in her daily life. “StepUp has had a positive impact on my entire family. It helps my family manage money, find jobs, and cope with their emotions. Everyone has become more tolerant and better able to manage things.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Building Confidence and Community: Marcus P. - When Marcus P. was a rising junior in high school, he was invited to check out StepUp’s Real World Program by his friend. Eager to acquire business skills and intrigued by the positive things he had heard about the teen program, Marcus decided to give Real World a try.</image:title>
<image:caption>That’s when he was introduced to a community of supportive staff, dedicated volunteers, and like-minded peers. This inclusive and welcoming environment made an impression on him. “I quickly recognized there was a wealth of new opportunities available to me through the Real World Program.” Among the program’s most profound impacts was its ability to help Marcus overcome his social anxiety. “I had always felt uncomfortable speaking in front of groups, but with the program's support and lots of practice, I now speak with confidence.” Marcus has proven to be a true community builder by setting his sights on engaging friends on his journey into the future. Marcus was inspired to share his experience with his circle of close-knit friends, believing that the program could open the same doors of opportunity. Now, every Tuesday evening, Marcus brings a group of friends to the Real World. “I have many interests, and the Real World has exposed me to lots of different career paths. Meeting different entrepreneurs through the program helped me realize that I can take my interests and turn them into a career. In the future, I hope to attend NC State University and study science.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Birth of a Success: LaRonda M. - “Life before StepUp was daunting. It was to a point where I couldn’t continue to push forward.”</image:title>
<image:caption>When LaRonda M. first started with StepUp, she thought it might be a waste of time. Having been part of many programs, she was skeptical of starting a new one because she was sick of all the false starts and false hope. But, after hearing about StepUp from our partner InterAct, she worked to complete her first phase of StepUp and changed her mindset tremendously. “StepUp helped me see that I can commit to things and that I love myself a lot. Through their support, I have grown to be more confident and more comfortable within myself.” The challenges LaRonda faced during the program were immense. She navigated the stress of relocating her family, only to move into a space plagued by flooding and structural issues. Amid these physical struggles, she juggled holding a job, parenting her children, and coping with her partner’s incarceration. “I had challenges that tried to hold me back but I still completed the program. Never give up and move forward even when things are hard. Life and time will continue despite how we are feeling. It is ok to invest in yourself.” Despite many hurdles, LaRonda graduated from StepUp. She is now a doula after obtaining her doula certification while balancing work, StepUp classes, and motherhood. To those considering StepUp, LaRonda offers heartfelt advice: be open to learning new things and meeting new people. And, most of all, making positive changes. “StepUp Ministry changed my life by showing me that there are people who really care and want to support you. I do love that I have a place where I can grow and help my community.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Overwhelmed to Overjoyed: Ashley H. - “Life was very overwhelming. I was mentally, physically, and emotionally drained.”</image:title>
<image:caption>With five small children and working long, tiring hours, Ashley H. did not have the work-life balance she craved. She felt the burden of everything and everyone depending on her and faced major challenges after losing her employment and having to move due to safety reasons. Then she heard about StepUp. “My god sister is an Alumni of StepUp Ministry and told me so many great things about the program that I called the next day to see how to get started.” In the beginning, her favorite part of StepUp was just knowing she could bring children and enjoy a warm meal together before class. As Ashley progressed in StepUp, she began to realize how much independence she had gained, how she was learning more about herself, and how to deal with many of life's complexities. “Without StepUp, I think life would still be chaotic. I was trying to balance everything out and tend to too much instead of putting more focus on myself, my children, and our growth.” StepUp provided Ashley with the opportunity to find her individual strengths so that she could continue to prosper regardless of any obstacles placed in her path. “I am just very thankful for the program. I have reached so many goals while being a part of StepUp.” Those goals include Ashley now being the proud owner of a four-bedroom home for herself and her children and starting her dream job as a case manager with Wake County. “I am thankful for everything that I have accomplished so far with the help of StepUp. I now have a better outlook on life and how my children and I can continue to prosper.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Family Ties: Makenzie H. - Five-year-old Makenzie H. is very confident in the reasons why she loves StepUp Ministry’s Children’s Program.</image:title>
<image:caption>“I like playing with toys, playing with my friends, and playing outside. I like to have fun and love to learn about EVERYTHING! It is super fun!! We get to have dinner, learn about all types of things, meet new people, and make new friends!” Makenzie’s mom, Ashley, first became a part of StepUp when she enrolled in our Employment Academy. Through this program and the hard work and dedication she put into it, she was able to secure a stable, well-paying job. Ashley has had one clear goal since joining StepUp: to stay engaged in a positive learning environment and transform her family. By enrolling her five children in StepUp's Children's Program she was able to achieve both aspects of this goal. “It has increased my ability to consistently attend since I feel secure knowing my child is also in a structured learning environment. I was happy that there was a place for my child to come to while I was in my program classes. All the staff show consistent dedication to each family member to ensure of overall support and care.” To Makenzie, the benefits have been much simpler. “I feel really happy and excited to see my teacher and friends each Tuesday night.” It's clear to all that StepUp’s programs have had a positive impact on both Ashley and Makenzie. While Ashley is thriving personally and professionally, she says Makenzie’s changes have also been remarkable. “It has made Makenzie more outgoing and sociable. She has been known to be very shy and reserved; however, since her joining the Children’s Program, she really enjoys coming and spending time with the friends she has made.” Ashley is dedicated to breaking cycles and providing a positive environment for her children. And the mission of StepUp has always been to assist in that transformation. “I am a single mother of five children, and trying to find a place for all of us to grow and become better as a family is hard. I am grateful for StepUp Ministry and the way they took my whole family in under their loving arms.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Finding Fulfillment: Collin R. - Collin discovered StepUp Ministry after quitting a job he found unfulfilling and draining.</image:title>
<image:caption>“My last job did not see value in me as an employee.” While visiting NC Works seeking employment help, Collin was referred to StepUp by one of their employees. He will be forever grateful for that recommendation. With a newfound focus on finding a job that valued him, he reached out to StepUp. “Initially, I thought that StepUp was just an employment recruiter of some sort, but I didn't realize how well-rounded it was and that it could help in all aspects of life.” After seeing the impact StepUp had on others in similar situations, he began to understand its value. As he looks back on his StepUp journey now, he realizes one of the most important lessons he learned was humility. Whenever he thought he knew everything, he found out there was always something new to learn - or relearn. “My experience has been enlightening. I've rethought how I think about obtaining employment. I have also learned how to humble myself while being confident in the skills that I have. I can't stress enough that I had to open myself enough to RELEARN because there have been times when I thought I knew everything and learned something new.” When asked the advice he’d give others who are where he used to be, Collin shared: “Take the step - no pun intended. The least you can do is learn something new or an approach that you haven't considered.” And when you take that step, he hopes it’s with StepUp. “I've seen the dedication and commitment StepUp has for helping the community. StepUp wants to see everybody win; they really care. They will put you in front of the people you need to talk to or give you the resources you need to be successful. They put in so much effort because they truly want everybody who attends the classes to be successful.”</image:caption>

Here, Jordan had the opportunity to discuss and explore intriguing topics with his peers and build on the strong foundation he created during his time in our Children’s Program. He also had the privilege of meeting StepUp Real World Coordinator and Participant Case Manager Nick Daley. Nick and Jordan bonded over discussions about Jordan’s hopes and dreams for the future and he encouraged Jordan to connect with StepUp staff to gain the guidance and encouragement he needed to achieve these goals. This level of mentorship demonstrates StepUp’s commitment to keeping our participants accountable and helping them always feel supported. “My responsibilities are more mature now than when I was in the Children’s Program. <image:title>Success Stories - And She Persisted: Nickia B. - Nickia B. is currently employed at Duke University School of Medicine, but her story did not begin there – she first learned about StepUp Ministry from her probation officer.</image:title>
<image:caption>At the time she began coming to StepUp, Nickia was facing homelessness, financial strains, credit hindrances, and self-esteem challenges. “I felt like a dark cloud followed me everywhere,” she shares. Joining StepUp did not make Nickia’s life instantly easier: “I was evicted a couple times during my time at StepUp. I also had childcare issues.” And yet she persisted. Nickia showed up week after week, fueled by the community of StepUp and what it offers. “I LOVED listening to everyone’s weekly joys on Tuesday night,” she says. StepUp also provided a platform for Nickia to build upon her professional goals. “Through my co-partner and her networks, I was able to travel to Napa Valley and shadow one of the country’s top destination wedding planners. I also received my Event Planning Certification.” Because of the employment skills training and experience she attained at StepUp, Nickia was able to secure employment at N.C. State University and eventually her current role at Duke University. Today Nickia is a member of the StepUp Alumni Program, where she has learned to strengthen her understanding of how her core values shape her pursuit of goals. She is grateful for the professional and, more importantly, personal connections she now has at StepUp: “I’ve gained a family that’s not mine biologically but is through love and unmatched support.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Tragedy to Triumph: Shannon B. - Shannon B. had a strong, loving upbringing where she and her 7 siblings were supported well by her mom and dad.</image:title>
<image:caption>However, tragedy struck when she was 15 years old: her dad died. What was once a happy family turned into her worst nightmare. The devastation led to mental health and living challenges within her family. This new reality filled Shannon with disappointment, grief, and anger. Her life thereafter began to spiral out of control and she realized she needed to do something about it – that’s when Shannon called StepUp. “I initially thought StepUp would be just another program that looked down on individuals in need and only cared about meeting certain quotas,” she shares. “I was totally wrong!” Shannon realized that StepUp invests in the lives of individuals and takes the time to teach life skills that cultivate personal and professional growth. She also observed that StepUp is interested in fostering well-being while also providing the tools to achieve any life goal. Shannon wasted no time applying the skills she learned at StepUp. Since graduating in 2014, her list of accomplishments are many: becoming employed, establishing a bank account, increasing her credit score, and attaining car and home ownership, among others. Today she works as a counselor in the mental health and substance field and recently began a new journey as a wellness facilitator. She also co-chairs the Young Professionals of StepUp. As Shannon looks back over where she was and where she is now, she is grateful she chose to join StepUp: “StepUp gave me the new start I needed in life.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Overcoming Loss: Serenity H. J. - Serenity H. J. overcame losing her job, the loss of her mother, and homelessness through the support of StepUp Ministry.</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2020, like so many others, Serenity was learning to navigate unknown territory. She was also caring for her sick mother and daughter, Royality, as the pandemic and her personal circumstances were wreaking havoc. Serenity’s life was overwhelmingly chaotic and full of frustrations. That changed after Serenity heard about StepUp Ministry. Serenity enrolled in the three-day virtual Employment Readiness workshop where she learned how to write a resume, succeed in an interview, and dress for success! Using the skills she developed at StepUp’s Employment Readiness program, Serenity secured a new job to replace the one she lost. She next enrolled herself and Royality in StepUp’s 48-week Life Skills program. It was during the program that Serenity’s mother passed away and she and Royalty became homeless. “It was without a doubt the most challenging part of this whole journey, but I knew I had to step up for myself and Royalty,” she shares. Royality thrived in the Children’s Program. While she was learning there, Serenity worked with her co-partner, case manager, and other participants to pursue her own goals. “Everyone at StepUp was there for me every step of the way. They kept me focused and believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself!” Today Serenity and Royality enjoy a home they own. Serenity also volunteers weekly at StepUp’s Life Skills program. Because of her remarkable time at StepUp, Serenity desires to pay it forward to others who are in an overwhelming and frustrating place like she once was. She has great hope for participants because of StepUp and the power of its community: “I’m truly grateful for my forever StepUp family!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Winging It Wasn’t Working: Patrick B. - When Patrick B. first came to StepUp Ministry, he was approaching life without a strategy or vision: “My mentality was out of sight, out of mind. I was winging life.”</image:title>
<image:caption>He was also skeptical about what StepUp had to offer. “I thought it would be something I would not get value from and would consume my time,” he shares. However, his experience at StepUp proved to be very different from what he expected. As Patrick took classes at StepUp, he began to embrace the idea of inward and outward accountability, even when it is uncomfortable. More specifically, Patrick learned how to meet his needs, set boundaries, and build financial management skills: “Learning how to budget helped me not only foreshadow the future, but also address the leaks in my finances.” Another aspect of Patrick’s StepUp experience included getting connected with a mentor. His mentor had critical conversations with him and encouraged Patrick to stretch himself: “He was gentle but firm about how my poor decisions were affecting what I was looking to achieve.” Through that mentorship, Patrick developed more discipline and learned how to cast a vision for himself. Today Patrick is a full-time entrepreneur. On a daily basis, he uses skills learned at StepUp, including vision casting and goal-centric strategies. He is also proactive about identifying what he wants to achieve and taking the necessary steps towards it. Instead of winging life, Patrick now approaches it with tenacity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Developing Clarity: Eva N. - Eva N. is currently employed in the healthcare division of the Veterans Affairs (VA).</image:title>
<image:caption>And it was at StepUp Ministry that Eva paved the pathway to this job. When Eva first arrived at StepUp, she was in need of clarity and help with her resume: “Life was extremely confusing, and I really needed to make changes quickly.” She also realized that StepUp means business! “They are not playing games – StepUp is very serious,” she shares. As Eva progressed from Step 1 to Step 2, she started to learn about herself and, more broadly, about how to approach the daily nuances of life: “All I initially thought was I am just coming in to get help with my resume (Step 1). However, the Life Skills Program (Step 2) helped me think more deeply about navigating life’s ups and downs in a healthy manner.” Applying what she learned in class, Eva eventually secured a terrific job opportunity. Upon graduation from the Life Skills Program, she continued her professional development journey as an alumni. “The Alumni Program (Step 3) helped me build more confidence in my public speaking skills,” she says. As a result of her time at StepUp, Eva’s perspective was molded and she began to consider both the responsibilities of today and what it is like to have an overarching, long-term perspective: “The skills I learned went beyond the four walls in the classroom – they were for a lifetime.” StepUp’s mission is to help participants establish tools for today and – more importantly – cultivate skills for a lifetime.</image:caption>

<image:title>Success Stories - Renewed Mindset: Donna F. - Before Donna F. came to StepUp Ministry, she was making a dollar a day.</image:title>
<image:caption>She was sleeping on a hard bunk, and living in a secured trailer with 20-plus other women: “I literally had nothing but a renewed mindset.” It was that renewed mindset that led her to StepUp. When Donna entered the Job Skills Program, she was four months shy from completing her prison sentence. “I was told how hard it would be to get a job or that I could only work ‘certain jobs’. However, I chose not to believe that.” Determined and motivated, Donna delved into the Job Skills curriculum and classes. Her instructors discussed the power of networking, self-advocating, and building personal and professional confidence. “I was taught how to become employable by great instructors who held me accountable,” she shares. A month after being released from prison, Donna secured a job. She then enrolled in the Life Skills Program and during that time made two goals: securing a driver license and enrolling at Wake Technical Community College. Donna achieved both goals and also added car ownership to her successes: “I went from being unemployed to becoming employed and taking three buses to get to one destination to owning a vehicle...I felt unstoppable!” Today Donna is a wife, first-generation college graduate, published author, Christian Life Coach, and podcaster. And it was at StepUp that she learned how to compliment her vision with the necessary skills and tools: “StepUp staff, volunteers, and my two incredible co-partners taught me how to achieve my dreams and goals.” StepUp aspires to teach all individuals, including Donna, the “how” for pursuing success.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When asked about life before StepUp, she shares this: “It was fun, but it has definitely been more fun now.” StepUp is every Tuesday night and Amonie comes prepared. This includes having a good mindset, being ready to learn new things, and getting to see and play with her friends. Amonie has been learning new stuff at StepUp and already knows what it is like to accomplish something! For example, she made goals for herself to not be so shy and be more outgoing – she has achieved those goals. When asked about one of her favorite parts about StepUp, Amonie mentioned the StepUp Store! StepUp kids earn StepUp Bucks for good behavior and achieving their goals. After what feels like a long time, all the kids go to the StepUp Store and shop for games and toys using those bucks. This teaches them how to earn money and save it and then spend it on fun stuff. Amonie really likes StepUp. She says, “StepUp is a joyful, fun place! I think everyone should come to StepUp.” StepUp is a joyful, fun place. And kids like Amonie are one of the reasons why.</image:caption>

<image:caption>However, after spending more time in the Real World Program, she wanted to come. At the beginning of her StepUp experience, Alexa was living with passivity: “I wasn’t very motivated to do things – I just went with the flow.” That changed as she was exposed to new, compelling approaches to life. As she spent more time in the Real World Program, Alexa developed the ability to deal with responsibilities in the now rather than waiting for later. “My mindset went from ‘if’ to ‘I will’,” she shares. This “I will” mindset enabled Alexa to identify her goals and take the necessary steps to achieve them. Alexa also broadened her internal and external point of view: “StepUp helped me change my way of thinking.” Alexa learned how to compliment her naturally artistic skills with a strategic, intentional point of view. A natural leader in her community, Alexa now has a broader view of herself and the world. And she aspires to use that knowledge to become the best version of herself. It is individuals like Alexa that StepUp seeks to cultivate into who they want – and can – become.</image:caption>

At that time, her mom was a StepUp participant, so Brianna would engage with other children whose parents were also in life skills classes. Years later, she is still connected to StepUp! Today Brianna participates in the Real World Program, where she is developing the skills to independently establish her life. “I appreciate learning about different skills that I can actually apply as I am ready to transition into the ‘real world’,” she shares. “Real World is a great program if you need guidance or just a little push — it will help you achieve your goals and get where you are trying to go.” She is currently building pivotal life skills such budgeting, cooking, and time management. However, Brianna realizes some ideas are learned over time: “I’ve gotten older, so I can appreciate the concepts I’m learning more now.” As Brianna considers the years she has been at StepUp, she is thankful: “I have grown up with StepUp and it’s nice to have a community of people who care about me.” From the Children’s Program to the Real World Program, Brianna is a reflection of StepUp’s family-centric, multi-generational approach to achieving success at every age.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dana W. describes her journey through life as “moving fast but going nowhere.” Instead of staying on an aimless hamster’s wheel, she decided to pursue a new path at StepUp Ministry. Although she has known about StepUp for many years through her job and other community members, it was not until recently that she decided to attend the Life Skills program. “Making the goal to commit to Life Skills was huge for me. Money management and credit improvement are skills I hope to walk away with so I can help my family and those around me break generational curses and get out of a generational poverty mindset,” she shares. Dana’s time in the Life Skills program has included facing some of her challenges: “Discussing how suicide has affected my life was a blessing — I was able to release and let go of some of the pain I have been carrying around for so long.” Individuals like Dana are motivating examples of people whose lives are changed through StepUp. <image:title>Success Stories - The Possibilities of Tomorrow: Facial A. - January ’20 Life Skills Graduate</image:title>
<image:caption>Facial A. was faced with a devastating loss in 2016 when her husband passed away. But instead of seeking the support she needed, Facial turned to drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms. This led to negative consequences, a very low point in her life where she realized she needed to make changes in her life. “I was using addiction as an excuse for all my failures,” she shares. When a friend invited Facial to attend a workshop run by StepUp Ministry, she decided to check it out. “I was immediately drawn into everything StepUp was offering,” she notes. Facial enrolled in the Life Skills program, which was a dignifying space for her to grow. Everybody at StepUp has a story. Throughout the 48-week Life Skills program, Facial learned she was not confined by her past. “StepUp Ministry gave me back my confidence. Gave me a voice — not to be afraid.” She also developed her personal core values and felt comfortable sharing any fears she had throughout the process. “The encouragement from the StepUp staff and volunteers was energizing,” she says. Today Facial is advancing her education, pursuing vocational opportunities, and preparing to give back as a co-partner! She desires to encourage other participants who might question their past like she did: “You don’t have to go back to yesterday — there’s nothing you can do about yesterday. But there’s a whole lot you can do about tomorrow.” Facial is grateful that StepUp Ministry taught her about the possibilities of tomorrow.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Success Stories - Back on Track: William B. - March ’23 Life Skills Graduate</image:title>
<image:caption>This is William B. He is 50 years old and has lived in Raleigh most of his life. During William’s teenage years, he started to experiment with substances and alcohol as a way to fit in. Soon after that, school was no longer his priority and his grades started failing. William eventually dropped out of school in the 9th grade. The attitudes he had in high school followed him into adulthood until he decided to make a change in his life. He eventually gave StepUp Ministry a call. William says, “This was one of the best decisions of my life.” Since he started the Life Skills program at StepUp Ministry, William has become more focused on getting his life back on track. He took the initiative to open a bank account and establish not only a checking account, but also a savings account. Most recently, he has been working on re-establishing a good credit score. He has other long-term goals like getting his license, a car, and starting his own food truck. William shares, “I would highly recommend anyone who is struggling with any type of addictions to try StepUp Ministry because they have given me a second chance in life and they can do the same for others.” He is an inspiring example of StepUp Ministry’s mission to provide ambitious individuals the resources for achieving success. We are thrilled that William is now part of the StepUp community.</image:caption>
